"Crystal windows" in 40 Polish cities
Forty "Crystal Windows" - works created jointly by the Polish-German pair of artists – will come into being in November in 40 Polish cities within the confines of the project commemorating the events of "crystal night" in 1938.
“Crystal windows" were launched last year in Wroclaw. This year, the originator of this idea, the Association Forum of Cultures, expanded the scope of the action - to 40 Polish cities. In addition to Wroclaw, Polish and German artists will work, among others, in Sopot, Gorzow Wielkopolski, Zielona Gora, Opole, Bytom and Gliwice.
Within the confines of the project, visual artists together will be looking for inspiration in selected cities, which belonged before the Second World War to Germany, and 70 years ago were the witnesses of German Jews pogrom. Then, in the same slabs of glass measuring 70cm x 150cm, they will leave the effects of their joint work.
"Crystal night " was a pogrom of German Jews which was committed at night from 9 to 10 November 1938 by SS raiding party, SA and Hitler Youth in Germany, also in Bytom (then Beuthen) and Gliwice (Gleiwitz). That night 91 people were killed, 171 synagogues were burned, 7.5 thousand shops and companies were plundered, and 26 thousand Jews were exiled to concentration camps.
