In Gdynia started on sunday an expedition in search of a famous Polish submarine ORP Orzeł (ORP Eagle) which had disappeared during its patrol on the North Sea in 1940. Its fate is still unknown.

The crew consists in divers, historicians and scientists. The catamaran is equipped with an underwater robot and sonar. The expedition Orzeł Balex Metal is flowing through the past German minefields on the North Sea, more or less 150 miles to the west from the Skagerrak strait.

Preparations to the quest initialized by the group of people bound with the MAP (Marine Exploratory Agency) lasted for three years. In this time were conducted, inter alia: historical researches based on Polish and foreign archives.

The member of the expedition announced that if they find the wreck they will not give the precise coordinates to protect the submarine from pirate exploration.

On the 23rd of May 1940 the crew of ORP Orzeł made for the open sea on a patrol but that mission was never completed.
