It was short but very interesting, exploratory for us, and above all very lucky expedition "- summed up Leszek Cichy, the head of the expedition, when he returned to the country. On 7th of June five Poles have reached the highest peak of the Arctic - Gunnbjorns Fjeld (3694 m), which is popularly known as Icy Mountain.
The highest peak reached 57-year-old Leszek Cichy, 48-year-old Ryszard Rusinek, 44-year-old Marek Kaminski, 42-year-old Miroslaw Polowiec and 25-year-old student of the Jagiellonian University Thomas Walkiewicz.
For the first time in history Polish expedition to Icy Mountain "HiFlyer Polar Ice Expedition 2008", was traveling under the banner of the Polish Association of Mountaineering, since the earthquake, which struck Iceland at the end of May.
Although Gunnbjorns Fjeld is not a high mountain, its peak reached only few people, less than forty. Leszek Cichy pointed out that it is not height that determine the success of the expedition but weather conditions.
