25th anniversary of Nobel Peace Prize for Lech Walesa

Gdansk will allocate 130 thousand zloty (almost 39 thousand euro) for the celebration of 25 anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize for Lech Walesa. On Thursday urban councilors adopted an correction to the budget, which, inter alia, takes this expense into account.

- This is Lech Walesa, who contributed to the fact that Gdansk is recognizable and well-known in the world, that anyone who thinks and talks about Poland, "Solidarity" and Lech Walesa, thinks also about Gdansk at the same time. He is a symbol of our city. Co-financing of these celebrations is therefore justified - said Bogdan Oleszek, the chairman of the City Council.

He also added that, thanks to this celebrations, Gdansk will be again the talk of the Europe and world. - This kind of event is a chance for the promotion of the city, the chance to draw tourists attention, and thus it is a potential income for those involved in the servicing of this event, as well as a work for people and institutions who will be participating in maintaining this convention - stressed Oleszek.

Celebrations, which are being prepared by the Lech Walesa Institute, are to be held in Gdansk, 5-6th December. Typically, more or less at that time the Nobel Peace Prize laureates meet in a traditional annual convention in Rome, but this year it will be held in Gdansk. Nobel Prize winners, who will show up in December in Gdansk, will also participate in the conference "Solidarity for the future."

Lech Walesa received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 year. He was awarded because of his fight for freedom and democracy in Eastern Europe countries. The decision was announced on 5th October. The ceremony of presenting an awards took place on December 10th, 1983 in Olso.
