Agata Mroz, twice gold medalist in European Championship in volleyball in 2003 and 2005 has died.

She died in hospital in Wroclaw. She was 26 years old. At the end of May doctors transplanted her a bone marrow.

Alicja Chybicka, head of the Department of Marrow Transplantation in Wroclaw, announced about the death of our young volleyball player. All the time we hoped that everything will be fine. Unfortunately, it was not enough lack and time for the bone marrow to began to work properly - said Jacek Olszewski at a special press conference.

On 22th of May our volleyball player underwent bone marrow transplant. The doctors hoped for the best, but they also stressed that the danger will be over only when the body accept transplanted bone marrow. It would take from 10 days to a month. Patient was in a good shape, she fought to the end. Her condition deteriorated dramatically on Wednesday morning. She was transferred to intensive therapy, but doctors was not able to help her.

Agata Mroz suffered from MDS, which is myelodysplastic syndrom. It is a collection of disorders in which the bone marrow does not produce enough blood cells. Some forms of MDS can progress to leukemia, a type of cancer. Our volleyball player suffered from this disease since she was 17, the deterioration occurred in the past year. She played then in the Spanish Murcia. As she said in interviews, she had to take a break in her sports career in peak period because her examination were deteriorationg. She wanted to have a baby, and she was afraid that the disease can make it impossible. Her daughter, Liliana, was born in April, one month and a half before the operation. She was an premature baby.

Agata Mroz was born in 1982 in Tarnow. She came from a sport family, her mother trained volleybal, her father - basketball. Her adventure with sports began from basketball. But as early as primary school she decided to focus on the volleyball.

She was 191 centimetres high. For several years she was performing for Polish representation. She played in the middle position. Twice, in 2003 and 2005 she won the gold medal on European Championships. Last year, due to bed state of her health she decided to take a break in her career.

President Lech Kaczyński decided to posthumously honoured Agata Mroz with an Order of Polonia Restituta (Krzyż Kawalerski Orderu Odrodzenia Polski). In her hometown a two-day mourning has been announced.
