Via Baltica
Through Biebrza and Rospuda swamps or outside the terrain under protection- till the autumn the government is to decide which way thousands of trucks will drive from Baltic countries.
Via Baltica is to join Baltic countries with Central Europe. On commission of General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways with demarcation of the road has been dealing for two years the experts of International Consulting Company Scott Wilson. During social consultancy the inhabitants of the towns around which Via Baltica is going to run will have opportiunity to acquaint themselves with decissions of the experts. They will be allowed to make comments.
Via Baltica must fit in the 150km passage from the shortest line between Warsaw and Budzisk on Polish-Lithuanian border. The specialists took into consideration more than 40 different possibilities of the route which were assessed on the basis of the following criteria: impact on evironment, economic and social parameters and effectiveness of transport. And only 3 propositions were left which differ only in details. They assume that the road should stretch from Warsaw to Łomża and further through Ełk in the direction of Suwałki. Such solution would allow to join the biggest amount of towns. it is more than 30 km shorter than the road number 8 running through Białystok and it does not interfere in the terrain under potection, omitting most of them from far afield. For example Rospuda Swamps are left untouched.
Via Baltica is part of the international road E67, partially realised road from Warsaw to Helsinki in Finland, running through Poland, Lithuania and Estonia. It is the most important road connection between Baltic countries.
