12 of May at 8:40 in the hospital in Warsaw by Płocka Street died Irena Sendler.

Irena Sendler during World War II saved more or less 2,5 thousand Jewish children from Warsaw ghetto. However, she helped Jews long before the ghetto was built.

Irena Sendler was born in 15th February 1910 in Otwock. Before the war she studied Polish language and she operated in Polish Socialistic Party. During the foreign occupation she worked for social assistance. Since autumn 1943 Sendler presided over children's section Council for Aid to Jews "Żegota".

After German decission about elimination of ghetto she started an action together with her co-worker of getting out children from ghetto and putting them in Polish families, orphanages and minsters.

In disguise of a nurse with help of ambulances she got to ghettos.

In 1943 Irena Sendler was arrested by Gestapo, tortured and sentenced to death. The activists from Żegota managed to bribe the guards. Sendler avoided execution by firing squad.

In 1965 the Institute Yad Vashem in Jerusalem awarded Irena Sendler with a title of Righteous Among the Nations and in 1991 she received honorary citizenship of Israel.

In 2006 she was nominated to the Nobel Peace Proze. Her candidature was suggested by American teacher Norm Conrad in agreement with Lech Kaczyński and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
