Beavers on a border line
Border guards who are guarding the border between Poland and Kaliningrad District have problems with patrolling almost one fourth of the border lenght. All this because of beavers, which on a border line are building beaver lodges.
- The biggest trouble with beavers have officers from the lookout station in Węgorzewo and Banie Mazurskie. As an example they can say that on the 22 kilometres section which is subordinated to the lookout station in Węgorzewo, beavers burrowed 38 ditchs and created few huge flood waters, through wich one cannot drive a quad or a tractor – said Justyna Szubstarska, Warmian-Mazurian border guard spokeswoman.
Border guard officers in Sępopol, Bartoszyce and Gołdapia also has big troubles with beavers. Officers estimated that beavers “controlled” more than 50 kilometres of Polish-Russian border (the whole lenght of border is 210 kilometres).
Commanding officer of Warmian-Mazurian border guard turned to foremen of border grounds, who are responsible for water economy, to “control the situation”. He also appealed to the Russian side to try to solve the beaver problem on their side of a border.
