The Month of Photography in Cracow

It is the sixth time when The Month of Photography in Cracow is taking place, it is one of the biggest photographic festivals in Europe, in Poland, next to festival in Lodz – the biggest. This year, more than 50 exhibitions in museums, galeries, cafés, private apartments, post factory rooms, church and synagogue, as well as in Main Marketplace and Small Marketplace and on the walls of old tenementhouses in Kazimierz and in former movie centre Światowid in New Foundry has been prepared. In a festival programme, which is beginning on May, 9th, film projections, workshops and lectures are also planned.
Each year the special guest of the Month of Photography is changing. After Hungary and Germany there is time for Poland. Why as a host? Because Polish photography is still little-known. Only Witkacy’s compositions are well known and highly valued abroad.
Main festival star will be Zofia Rydet. First such a big show of famous series “Sociological recording” ("Zapis socjologiczny"), unprecendented project in history of Polish art. Rydet for few years has been traveling around Poland, taking photos of people in their everyday surroundings. More than 100 photographs, selected from 30 thousand negatives one can see in Galery Starmy. The show “Polish Venus 2008” ("Wenus polska 2008") refering to famous in the sevetieths Cracovian photographic exhibitions “Venus”, probably the only one uncensored exhibitions of nudity in times of PRL, also shows promise.
