Malta Festival 2008
Thirty-seven horses, masters of stunt riding, a circus tent, two Gypsy orchestras from Moldavia and Romania, Chagal-like atmosphere, and the spectator in the middle of the two-hour gallop – this is how one can most briefly describe the attraction of the upcoming theatrical season.
In May 2008, Lake Malta in Poznań will see Zingaro, the famous French theatre company and star of one of the most important theatre festivals in Europe - Avignon. In their first appearance in Poland, the artists shall perform their newest piece ”Batutta”, brought to Poznań specially from Hong Kong by “Malta” ITF.
Zingaro’s most important actors are horses; to stress their importance, the company calls itself “equestrian” theatre. It should also come as no surprise that names of “Batutta’s” horse stars – Baryshnikov, Balanchine, Diaghilev, or Nijinsky – appear on bills announcing the event.
In the ensemble’s own words, the performance is “… a journey into the world of childhood, which, like a spinning wheel of events, interweaves (…) pages from comic strips, most crucial moments of cowboy films, fragments of films by Tex Avery, the Marx Brothers or even Rene Claire with his legendary chases with family or wedding portraits, on which we see impassive brides, all clad in white and dreaming about the unknown; and all this spiced with hot musical sauce, the way Fellini himself liked it. Running next to the horses, heroes of these memories in their well-cut and well-fitted frock coats with braces crossing, and girls wearing blood-coloured lace dresses, bring to mind gold diggers or the Feria dancers from Seville, rather than Gypsies from Central Europe.”
