Genetically Modified Food
The Government came up with a subterfuge which allows to lock or heavily hamper genetically modified plants production in Poland. The European Union's law does not allow the member states to forbid openly growing genetically modified food(GMO). But Polish government like other countries in EU does not want to allow such crops.
The opinion polls indicate that 60 % of Poles is afraid that transgenic plants are harmful to their health. And 55% demand to impose a ban on growing GMO.
Our present regulations forbid to grow GMO and lay us openly to conflict with the European Commission and in result almost certainly to defeat in front of European Court of Justice. So the government created a subterfuge which assumes that administrative authorities and regional voivodships would have rights to create free from GMO zones.
Such resolution accepted by Town council is enough. In practice it allows all communes and voivodships to call themselves "GMO free zones". Such zones may appear in the whole Poland because in the last few years all Voivodship Authorities declared that they do not want transgenic plants.
However we do not know if Brussels will agree on it. Earlier a similar law was trying to introduce Austria but they failed. In 2006 European Court of Justice said that Austrian Land Oberosterreich had no right to declare itself GMO free zone.
