22th of April is the International Earth Day
The Earth Day is an international action taking place on 22th of April. Its purpose is to promote ecology and to make people aware of how important natural environment is.
The first person who drew attention to Earth threatening problems was John McConnell. In 1969 he took part in UNESCO conference concerning natural environment and proposed to establish the Earth Day. That idea found supporters among members of United Nations. On 26th of February 1971 in the headquarters of the Organization in New York the Earth Day was proclaimed .
Every year the action gains appreciation. Its message is that of education and actions for Earth protection. In 1990, 200 million people from 141 countries took part in it and the Earth Day became an international holiday.
International Coordination Offices for Earth Day were established. In June of 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro took place, with representatives from 160 countries. In 2000 5 thousand ecological groups from 184 countries took part in the holiday of our planet. The real shock was 2002 year, when 1,5 billion people were involved and in Italy for the third time was organized a conference on using renewable energy.
