5 thousand people defended the lake
Yesterday in Kruszwica, almost 5 thousand people protested against new strip mine, which is to be built by lignite coal mine Konin. Coal mine Konin wants to activate new lignite coal strip mine next to Tomisławice village, just a few kilometres from Gopło lake and Goplo Millenium Park (Nadgoplański Park Tysiąclecia), which is included in European Union programme of nature conservation Nature 2000.
This park protects the habitat of many birds species, for example little bittern, crane and bean goose, as well as the tokens of the beginnings of Polish history – next to Goplo, the Mouse Tower is standing.
The mine authorities assured that this investment will be very safe for the environment. Yet, the citizens of these regions are convinced that the coal mine will cause ecological catastrophy. They are afraid that the huge pit, which would arise during the mining, would cause the fall in the level of ground waters and, in effect, would destroy the lake.
In yesterday’s demonstration in Kruszwica, the citizens of the city and surrounding villages participated, as well as ecologists, who came from the whole of Poland.
