USA ambassador in Poland Victor Ashe presented Leszek Balcerowicz, former chairman of NBP, with Jan Nowak-Jeziorański Award. Leszek Balcerowicz was awarded for the committment on behalf of strenghtening the public service.

As ambassador said: “responsible monetary politics and courageous economical reforms, suggested by professor Leszek Balcerowicz, pave Poland the way to NATO and UE”. Balcerowicz while thanking said, that he it had a great luck to know personally Jan Nowak-Jeziorański. Leszek Balcerowicz, worldwide famous economist, is a professor of Main School of Trade (Szkoły Głównej Handlowej).

Twice, in years 1989-1991 and 1997-2000, he served as a deputy prime minister and finance minister. In years 2001-2006 he was a chairman of NBP. Jan Nowak-Jeziorański Award is handed in to remind about life and accomplishments of legendary courier from Warsaw.

This nickname is derived from II World War, when Nowak-Jeziorański was a liaison officer between command of National Army (Armii Krajowej) and Polish government in exile. After II World War, for quarter of century he was a leader in Polish section of Radio Free Europe (Radio Wolna Europa). He was also an advisor of presidents – Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter. In 1975 he moved to United States and started his activity in the Polish Americans Congress. He died on 20th January 2005.
