Polish Embassy in Belgrade in Fear
Kosovo declared independence a week ago and is expecting recognition on the part of European (especially) states and other countries, counting speciffically on the USA. Poland is very likely to officially recognize Kosovo on Tuesday, 26th.
However, citizens of Serbia are not willing to let go of what they consider the heart of their of republic and the center of its historical origins (it's like Cracow with Little Poland and Poznań with Greater Poland seceded from Poland). After USA declared it is happy of the fact of Kosovo's independence, American Embassy in Belgrade was vandalized and a granade was thrown in (nobody was injured).
Yet this reaction of Serbian citizens was enough to evoke fear in Polish Ambassador to Serbia. The Polish Embassy building is 70 meters away from the American and it is guarded by mere two Serbian police officers. Polish Embassy turned to Serbian authorities for the increase in security forces. Also, additional number of Polish BOR (Government Security Bureau) officers are flying to Belgrade on Monday.
Polish Embassy to Serbia calls on Polish citizens travelling to Serbia for extra caution and asks Poles to put any travel plans to Kosovo on hold for the time being.
