86th birthday of Władysław Bartoszewski
Władysław Bartoszewski is an extraordinary man. He always does only what he considers is right. He always bravely says what he thinks is necessary. He is a devoted Polish patriot, and at the same time he is open-minded and free from any nationalisms - as Israel Gutman, head historian in Yad Cashem Institute, described Bartoszewski.
Prof. Bartoszewski was born on February 19, 1922, in Warsaw. During World War II he was a prisoner in Auschwitz and an AK soldier. During the occupation he was an activist in the organization which helped Jews - "Żegota". He was honoured to the title of a "Just among the Nations". He also participated in Warsaw Uprising. He spent 8 years in prison, during martial law he was an internee. At the end of November 2007 prime minister Donald Tusk appointed him secretary of state in Prime Minister's Office.
